Tucked away in western San Fernando Valley, West Hills is a Los Angeles neighborhood located just 30 miles or so from downtown L.A. Although it still has easy access to the rest of Los Angeles, West Hill is a quiet and peaceful neighborhood that offers respite to its residents with its tree-lined streets and its calm and easygoing vibe.
An affluent neighborhood that’s less than 9 square miles in size, residents love West Hills for being a peaceful and friendly community. This is the kind of place that has serene, tree-shaded streets, where neighbors still watch out for each other and the spirit of volunteerism remains strong. Once part of a rancho, West Hills started becoming the community we know today back in the early 20th century.
West Hills is definitely quieter and more relaxing than many other Los Angeles neighborhoods and it has its own distinctively laidback and historic charm. West Hills is home to several historical landmarks that might pique the interest of your inner history buff. Shadow Ranch Park on Vanowen Boulevard is particularly popular. The 1961 American drama film “The Children’s Hour,” which starred Audrey Hepburn, was filmed here. Today, the ranch has lighted basketball courts, community rooms, football fields, and play areas of children.
On the topic of iconic film stars, one such person made West Hills his home. This was silent film star Francis Lederer whose estate, the Lederer Estate, contains two registered Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monuments: the residence itself and the stables.
For outdoor recreational activities, you might want to check out the greenbelt west of West Hills. It has been kept undeveloped and offers plenty of recreational opportunities for nature lovers. As for your shopping needs, West Hills has no lack of shopping centers such as Fallbrook Center and Westfield Mall. There’s also a wide variety of places of worship in the area.
